The catalytic properties of the newly prepared nickel containing carbon nitride composites were evaluated in the hydrogenation of acetone to produce isopropanol. The experiments were carried out in the gas phase at ambient pressure and the temperature region 120-200°C. The effects of reaction temperature, catalyst composition, H2/acetone molar ratio and acetone space velocity were studied. The highest acetone conversion and isopropanol selectivity (>98-99%) is observed at 140-180°C and molar ratio of hydrogen to acetone to 1-1.2. Under the experimental conditions specified, no acetone condensation products were observed. Increasing the temperature slightly increased the amount of isopropyl ether. Acetone conversion and isopropanol yield decrease slightly with increasing space velocity under conditions of molar ratio of hydrogen to acetone within 1-1.2, after which a more noticeable decrease is observed. However, the decrease in selectivity for isopropanol is expressed to a lesser extent compared to the conversion of acetone.
